DESKTOP 1611 - YELLOWJACKET
Yellowjacket or Yellow jacket is the common name in North America for predatory social wasps of the genera Vespula and Dolichovespula. Members of these genera are known simply as "wasps" in other English-speaking countries. Most of these are black and yellow like the eastern yellowjacket Vespula maculifrons and the aerial yellowjacket Dolichovespula arenaria; some are black and white like the bald-faced hornet, Dolichovespula maculata. Others may have the abdomen background color red instead of black.
They can be identified by their distinctive markings, their occurrence only in colonies, and a characteristic, rapid, side-to-side flight pattern prior to landing. All females are capable of stinging. Yellowjackets are important predators of pest insects.
I managed to get into a yellow jacket nest a few years ago. They swarmed me, got in my clothes and hair, stung me quite a few times. I am NOT their biggest fan!!! Nice photo, though. Thanks for linking up at https://image-in-ing.blogspot.com/2017/12/wishing-you-merry-christmas.html
We have Yellowjackets at our float cabin home each summer. We always have to be on the lookout for nest building near the cabin, but there is no way to prevent them from build on shore or worse yet, making hidden underground nests. I hang wasp traps from June through October and that helps keep them at bay. Even so, many summer nights we can't eat outdoors without them landing on our plates. We call the "meat wasps" because that is their favourite food. - Margy
beautiful creatures but if you don't mind, keep them away from me please ;-)
whatever will happen or not, we'll just have to wait and see but I do wish with all of my heart that you and your loved ones will have the most beautiful and happy healthy blessed year ever !
