Purple Swamphen (Porphyrio porphyrio - Rallidae) is an Australian bird. Unlike many wetland species which have dull plumage to aid camouflage
among the rank vegetation, the Purple Swamphen has a resplendent
purple-blue neck, breast and belly, and a gaudy, oversized bill and
frontal shield, both of which are bright red, as are its beady eyes.
And when a Swamphen walks away from you, it usually flicks its tail up
and down to reveal a gleaming white rump, which contrasts with the
bird’s black upperparts. The entire combination is dazzling when
ambling across a sunlit grassy sward.

ReplyDeleteBeautiful image! We have Grey-headed Swamphen here. Their white rump is quite attractive.
ReplyDeleteI'm learning so much about bird here, that's a great photo!
ReplyDeleteThe purple swamphen has been introduced into parts of Southern Florida where it is successfully living. It's not totally welcome, though, as it eats other birds' eggs. For several years it's been on the checklist from the American Birding Association, because many of the birds have been breeding for quite a while.
