Abutilon is a large genus of flowering plants in the mallow family, Malvaceae. It is distributed throughout the tropics and subtropics of the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Australia. General common names include Indian mallow and velvetleaf. The genus name is an 18th-century New Latin word that came from the Arabic ’abū-ṭīlūn (أبو طيلون) the name given by Avicenna to this or a similar genus. The species illustrated is A. pictum.

This is gorgeous. It looks similar to hibiscus too. Thank you so much for sharing.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful - especially those veins in the petals!
ReplyDeleteThat flower is very special to me! When I was a child it was growing over the fence - the neighbour we thought was a witch! She really was just a sad, cranky alcoholic with big, big scary dogs. We used to creep around the side and pick the flowers (our side of the fence) and run away feeling very proud of ourselves. I have only seen it once since then, a neighbour in our street has it growing now. Now I even know what it is called. Thanks Nick:) A great image as well as the memories. And of course, thanks for sharing it on MoM:)
ReplyDeleteI can see the relationship to the hibiscus and the much smaller mallows I have in my garden. I love the veins in the petals!!
ReplyDeletelove the papery-looking flowers. Great shot!!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! I love the colour. I've seen them in yellow in the Winter Garden in Helsinki.
