DESKTOP 2349 - SUMMERFIELD REVISITED

Summerfield

On a perfect Summer's day
Walking on a fresh green field,
Making memories warm and bright
For a cold and dismal Winter's night.

On a Summerfield my merry fay,
With a kiss a promise sealed:
Lips that savoured cool sweet wine,
Now in Winter's tears taste brine.

Oh to be in Summerfield again,
'Neath blue sky on verdant grass,
Clasping hands and heart alight
How we'd love, all sense delight...

But instead in Winter's bane
I look in frozen looking glass:
Wrinkles, white hair, all decline,
And for Summerfield I long and pine.

DESKTOP 2064 - LOVE'S LOCKS

We’ve all seen bridges around the world bedecked in shiny (or not so shiny) locks with engraved initials or messages to lovers, best friends or family. This is from the Yarra River Footbridge in Melbourne, which links the City with Southbank.

Yet whilst love lock bridges look picturesque and romantic, they’re not as good an idea as they seem. One of the most famous love lock bridges, the Pont des Arts in Paris, took a stand against the thousands of padlocks along the bridge back in 2015 by removing every single one and any that came after. Why? Because the massive number of locks on the bridge is actually dangerous. Adding all those metal locks to a bridge that was built to hold and carry a certain weight creates structural damage and even the risk of the bridge collapsing into the river.

Hundreds of kilos of locks added every month may cause damage to the bridge railing or even parts of the bridge to collapse. Send flowers instead.

DESKTOP 1601 - IT'S NOT SNOW...

New Spring (1)

Sitting underneath white branches
Far you hear winds are wailing;
Overhead you see the cloudbanks
Wrap themselves in misty veiling,

See how on bare field and forest
Cold and barren death is seizing;
Winter's round you, winter's in you,
And your very heart is freezing.

Suddenly white flakes come falling
Down on you; and vexed and soured
You suppose some tree has shaken
Over you a snowy shower.

But it is no snow that's fallen,
Soon you see with joyful start
Look, it's fragrant almond blossoms
Come to ease and tease your heart.

What a thrilling piece of magic!
Winter's turned to May for you,
Snow's transmuted into blossoms,
And your heart's in love anew.
